Business Visit – The Rural Rose
Today our class had the opportunity to visit The Rural Rose in Fisher, Illinois, owned and operated by local entrepreneur Shanna Hortin. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that this boutique is more than just a place to shop—it’s the result of passion, creativity, and a genuine love for serving the community.
Shanna shared how The Rural Rose began as a small idea rooted in her desire to bring quality, stylish, and affordable products to a rural town. What started as a simple vision has grown into a warm, welcoming boutique that reflects her personality: thoughtful, hardworking, and deeply invested in the people around her.
During our visit, Shanna talked openly about the realities of small-business ownership—the long hours, the constant decision-making, and the courage it takes to keep evolving. She emphasized the importance of staying authentic, listening to customers, and creating an experience that feels personal. Whether it’s clothing, home décor, or unique gifts, every item in the shop is chosen with intention.
What stood out most was Shanna’s entrepreneurial spirit. She built The Rural Rose from the ground up, learning as she went, trusting her instincts, and leaning into the support of her small-town community. Her story is a reminder that entrepreneurship isn’t just about selling things—it’s about building connections, taking risks, and putting heart into everything you do.
Our visit to The Rural Rose was inspiring, and it highlighted exactly what small-town entrepreneurship can look like: personal, purposeful, and full of grit.
